The ACC has been the strongest overall conference in the college basketball land this season but in some ways, it may have worked against them. They have spent a season beating each other up. Still, there are many teams with NCAA Tournament hopes still alive. These bubble teams hope to join virtual locks for the NCAA tournament UNC, Duke, Wake Forest, Clemson, and Florida State. Here is a look at the four ACC teams that are on the NCAA bubble, and what their chances look like:
Miami Hurricanes – The Hurricanes have made a name for themselves this season with some truly quality wins. They played a tough schedule to include a really strong conference schedule and need two more wins against NC State and Georgia Tech to reach .500 in the ACC. The Hurricanes pretty much need to win these two games and they are likely in. Quality wins over Wake Forest, Florida St., and twice against Boston College bode well for their chances, but they still have to take care of business this last week.
Boston College Eagles – Boston College has played giant killer all year in the ACC as they have knocked off the big two in Duke and UNC, as well as Florida State. They have a conference record of 8-6 and two conference games left that should be wins. The problem with this bubble team is those are the games they have trouble with. The Eagles play NC State and Georgia Tech this last week, and winning at least one will probably get them in. Winning both would virtually assure it.
Maryland Terrapins – The Terps are another team that likely have their own bubble fate in their hands. They play Wake Forest, and Virginia and sit at .500 currently in conference play. One win they are likely in, and two they are almost assured. This is largely based upon huge quality wins over UNC, Michigan St, Miami, Michigan, and Virginia Tech. Though they have some very bad losses, the Terps are in decent position as long as they show up for the final week of the season in a big way. The game against Wake is particularly important, as this would be another huge quality win if they can pull it off. The selection committee loves last minute regular season quality wins.
Virginia Tech – See the posting for the Terps above… The Hokies are carbon copies of the Terps in many ways. They have huge quality wins….Clemson, Boston College, Wake Forest, and Miami. And some tough losses to set up a final week scramble. The roadblocks for Virginia Tech is a bit larger than for the Terps, however. They face UNC and Florida State in the final two games. They must have one to have any real chances. Two wins over those two schools would do the trick nicely, but that is probably not going to happen. The Hokies must take at least one of these games or win the ACC tournament.
