The 2009 Men’s ACC Tournament Schedule – Picks and Predictions thumbnail

Going into the 2009 Men’s ACC Tournament, trying to pick the games can be quite the challenge. This year, even more so than in year’s past, the ACC is made up of teams that are quite powerful from top to bottom. Even the lower half of the ACC can still beat the upper half on a given day, and this makes predictions a bit tougher than one might think. Still, history, match ups, and common sense can take you a long ways in predicting the 2009 Men’s ACC Tournament. Here are my round one predictions as well as the full schedule for the 2009 Men’s ACC Tournament:

Thursday, March 12. 2009

No. 8 Virginia Tech vs. No. 9 Miami, Noon (Raycom)

The Hokies go into this game with Miami on a bit of a slide, while the Hurricanes have been making a push for a late season NCAA bid. Miami is capable of dominating an opponent, but this game feels remarkably like a Hokie win to me. They are due for a break out win. Virginia Tech will win this at or near the buzzer.

No. 5 Clemson vs. No. 12 Georgia Tech, 2:30 p.m. (Raycom)

This match up is going to be much more interesting than many might expect as the Tigers try to contain the Yellow Jackets. Do not let the poor seeding fool you as these Yellow Jackets are fully capable of packing a sting. Still, the Tigers have a stifling defense and a national power mentality. The Tigers will win this one in the only blowout of the first round.

No. 7 Maryland vs. No. 10 NC State, 7:00 p.m. (ESPN2)

Maryland and NC State will be the best game of the opening round as both programs have a ton of pride and history in the ACC tournament. Expect the Terps to go down early in this game against a fired up NC State squad, and then to turn it around in the second half. The Terps need to make some waves in the ACC Tournament to make the NCAA tournament and this is the first step. I think they will take that step.

No. 6 Boston College vs. No. 11 Virginia, 9:30 p.m. (Raycom)

This is another game that could very easily turn into an upset, but I expect the seedings to hold up. Boston College is a very good team, but this is exactly the type of game that the Eagles struggled with throughout the season. Those middle of the road ACC teams seemed to give them fits, while the powerful teams got the best effort out of Boston College. With this being a national stage and all, I expect that Boston College will have little trouble this time. They win big over a scrappy Cavalier squad.
