Number One Seeds For The NCAA Basketball Tournament – Who Will Get Them? thumbnail

March Madness and the NCAA Tournament is right around the corner, and the number one seeds are beginning to take shape. Currently, their are five real favorites to receive the number one seeds for the tournament, and four available slots. Which four teams should get the number one seeds for the NCAA tournament this year? Here are my four picks, and why they are there:

North Carolina – The Tar Heels are on quite a streak. They dropped from the lofty perch of number one earlier this season and have returned to that spot to close the season. In spite of three losses this season, the Tar Heels still won the ACC outright by beating Duke on Sunday, and largely dominated all competition throughout the season. Every single loss the Tar Heels suffered came in conference. That speaks highly of the power of the ACC, and the meaning behind winning that conference.

Pittsburgh – Pitt could certainly make an argument for deserving the number one slot overall, and not many basketball fans or experts would argue that it is wrong. Pitt has been very strong all season long, and they have won virtually every big game that has been laid out in front of them. They are a team that is built for NCAA tournament success, and will be a tough match up for any team that is unlucky enough to face them. They are one of the few teams that match up quite well with the Tar Heels.

Memphis – This is the team that nobody really seems to give respect to. Not this sportswriter. Memphis is as powerful a force as any, and they are going to make some believers out of the rest of the country fast in the NCAA tournament. They sport some of the best shooters in the country and a determined team that never quits. To get 28 wins as a college basketball program with that schedule is phenomenal. They will go far in the tournament.

UCONN – Uconn is a no brainer here in spite of the late season loss they experienced to Pittsburgh. Losing to Pittsburgh is not a big deal when you consider how good the Panthers are this year. The problem is that Uconn lost to Pitt twice this season, and that could get into their brain if they meet again. That is not much of a stretch as both teams are among the best the country has to offer in college basketball.

Though I gave the final spot to Uconn, I would be remiss not to mention Louisville. They actually won the Big East conference this year and a case could be made for them to be at number four. The thing is, they did have some really bad losses out of conference, and that was the difference to me. Unconn has only 3 losses and Louisville 5. That is reason enough, with similar schedules, to put Uconn over Louisville. Still, I would not want to face the Cardinals in this tournament. The Cardinals are going to feel slighted and highly motivated if they do not get that fourth number one seed.

These predictions are pre-conference tournaments, so things could certainly change. Especially where the Big East is concerned. If Louisville wins the tournament as the number one seed, then their is little chance they will be left out of the number one club. We shall see…. Let the Madness begin!
