Big East Bubble Teams Fighting For NCAA Tournament Bids thumbnail

With only one week left in the regular season, the Big East is beginning to look very well represented when it comes to potential NCAA Tournament teams. As of right now, there are no less than seven Big East teams appear to be relative sure bets to be in. Those teams are Pittsburgh, Uconn, Marquette, Louisville, Syracuse, Villanova, and West Virginia. Still, some Big East teams are on the bubble, and could get in. Here is a look at the four Big East bubble teams and their NCAA tournament outlooks:

Georgetown Hoyas – Georgetown is one of those teams that the NCAA traditionally loves. They have been there many times before, are a large school with a big following, and have top notch wins against quality schools such as Villanova, Uconn, Memphis, and Syracuse. When compared with other bubble teams, they are likely to get another big nod for playing the hardest schedule in the entire NCAA this year. The problem for the Hoyas? Their overall record is pretty bad with 15 wins going into this week. They have two games against St Johns and DePaul left. Win those two, and a couple of games in the Big East Tourney, and they should get in.

Cincinnati Bearcats – The Bearcats have a better overall record than the Hoyas, but they have played a much softer schedule. Also, they have a very bad record against the better teams. Still, they have 18 wins going into the final week and two games left that they should be able to win. Twenty wins as a Big East team would likely be impressive regardless of how the wins shake down. They have a chance, but must win out and at least one or two tourney games would not hurt.

Providence Friars – This team mirrors Cincinnati in many ways as it pertains to the bubble, yet their schedule was even easier than the Bearcats. They did upset Pittsburgh and are on a pretty good roll here lately, but 18 wins and a final game against Villanova seems to be working against them. If the Friars can beat Villanova, it will certainly help their chances, but it may be too little too late without some conference tournament magic.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish – The Irish will need more than a little luck to get an at large NCAA tournament bid this season. They first need to beat Villanova, and then St. Johns to close the regular season. Then they need to win as many conference tourney games as possible. Then they have to pray for some other bubble teams to falter, as well as the selection officials to overlook a less than .500 conference record. Not likely, but they are the Irish. It could happen, but don’t count on all this happening.
