The Florida State Seminoles are facing a very difficult scenario as we near the end of the regular season in college basketball. The Seminoles are tied for third in the standings, which is a good thing for the majority of Florida St fans. Nobody really expected the Seminoles to be in this strong of a position going into the last three games of the season. Though they are tied for third with national powers Wake Forest and Clemson, they face a daunting schedule of three brutal games in the next week and half.
First up they will face a tough Clemson squad that has the talent to beat anybody. The Seminoles showed they can play defense as well in the early win this year over those same Tigers. Still, the Tigers are sure to be fired up against FSU, and they will need to match that intensity to move ahead of the Tigers in the standings. Toney Douglas in particular will need to perform up to par. The Seminoles will need every single one of Douglas’ twenty points per game.
Next they will face Duke at Cameron. In the best of circumstances, the Blue Devils are a tough draw. The Seminoles pulling off the upset at Cameron will be even more difficult. Add to the fact that Duke has lost a couple of games recently and is a bit ticked off, and you will see that the game is even more difficult. Finally, it is Senior night at Duke for this game. Ouch.
The last game of the year is against those pesky Virginia Tech Hokies. This is one team that nobody like to face. You never know what you are going to get against them. It is also a game that the Seminoles simply must win to solidify their standing in the NCAA tournament. Barring a complete three game collapse, I think that FSU will make the NCAA tournament. They have been a fairly strong and consistent team in the best college basketball conference in the country. The problem is, they will likely get a very bad seeding if they do not impress over the next week.
The Seminoles will also be in a fairly good place in the ACC tournament. A three seed would sure look good to them, and a four seed is not that bad either. Anything higher than that would be a disappointment for this fast, athletic team.
