The Boston College Eagles have experienced a college basketball season of extremes. Extreme upsets both for and against them, as well as extreme swings in their national popularity. The Eagles are a talented team to be sure. They have beaten the likes of both North Carolina and Duke in this manic college basketball season. The problem is that they are completely and wildly inconsistent. If it were not for the huge swings, the Eagles would be a certain lock for the NCAA tournament.
Boston College has gotten impressive performances from super guard Tyrese Rice this year. Rice has averaged 17 points, and five assists per game. Many of those assists were passes to forward Joe Trapani and Rakim Sanders. Both Trapani and Sanders have also averaged double figures with 14 and 12 points per game. Forward Corey Raji has also been strong in averaging 10 per contest. The real issue for Boston College has not been scoring as much as stopping the opposition. The Eagles have been inconsistent their as well. They will go out and hold Duke to only 74 points in a win, then allow Wake to drop 93 in a loss.
As the Eagles approach the final week or so of the college basketball season, they will need to win their final two games and probably a game or two in the ACC tournament to get into the NCAA tournament. They face NC State and then close the regular season against Georgia Tech at home. Both of these games are very much games that Boston College should win, and can little afford to lose. They are just the types of games that might have tripped them up over the course of the season so far. The Eagles have shown the ability to be a top flight team. Now they need only to show they can win the games that they should consistently. The Wolfpack and the Yellow Jackets are no pushovers, but they are not really teams that Boston College should lose to this year.
Georgia Tech took the Eagles to overtime back in late Jan. before succumbing to the Eagles 80-76. NCST lost to the Eagles four days later by eleven points. The Eagles now need to repeat that two game series at least as far as the win/loss column. The rest of the season depends upon it. Winning these last two games would put Boston College in at least sixth place, with the potential to move up to fifth depending on what happens with Florida State. Fifth in the ACC will certainly get them into the NCAA, but sixth could leave them vulnerable.
