On the eve of the last regular season ACC showdown between Duke and Carolina for 2009, already Tobacco Road fans are looking forward to their meet up in the 2009 ACC tournament championship. They fully expect Duke and Carolina to meet for the ACC title and with the way things are looking, they might just be right. North Carolina is playing the best basketball of their year so far, and look primed to not only win the ACC, but to be a serious threat for a National title as well. Duke has had a rough stretch over the last month, but have regrouped this past week to get ready for the Tournament season. A Duke Carolina ACC tournament match up is far from fantasy or wishful thinking.

One needs only to look at the Men’s ACC tournament history to see why this is likely. Duke or Carolina has won or played in the ACC championship game virtually every year for twenty plus years. You can count on one hand the number of times one of the superpowers have not at least played in the ACC tournament championship game. The most common match up in ACC championship game history? You guessed it… Duke versus Carolina.

This fascinating basketball fact is far from a complaint from ACC country. We ACC fans are pretty much used to them being there. Some folks over in Wake Forest, Clemson, and Florida State might take issue with that statement, but the facts are what they are. While this season has been more competitive than many previous years, Duke and Carolina are still the odds on favorites to make the ACC Tournament Finals.

Another thing that might be working in their favor is the seedings. It appears that Duke and Carolina will be 1-2 in the seedings for the ACC tournament yet again, and in the driver’s seat. That means a bye in the first round, and a high seed opponent being likely for the second round. That makes for an easier path to the finals than most ACC teams will be looking at. This is particular important in this year where anybody in the ACC can beat anybody. Even poor Georgia Tech could pull off the upset. You just do not know what might happen….Except, of course, that Duke and Carolina will meet once again for the championship.

Some things are just painted blue, and there is nothing we can do about it.
