Lebron James said it best after the Cleveland Cavaliers secured the first berth in this years NBA playoffs. “We got one goal,” LeBron James said. “That’s to win an NBA championship.” The celebration was not present in the least. As a matter of fact, the Cavs hardly seemed to notice that the 91-73 win over the Milwaulkee Bucks meant anything special at all. This is not surprising given the high hopes that Cleveland and Lebron has for this season.
James was sterling as usual against the Bucks with 23 poitn, and Delonte West pitched in with 13 pts and 8 steals in the Wednesday night win over the Bucks. Ironically, the Bucks may be the team that the Cavs face in round one, and they looked like no match for the Cavs. The Cavs amazingly have lost only one game all season at home, and are right in line with Boston for the number one seed in the East. If the Cavs secure that number one seed, then they will have something to celebrate. That would mean the all important home court advantage throughout the playoffs. That has to be a scary prospect for other east contenders.
Boston is the main competition for that coveted home court advantage and they seem to know that it is a big deal as well. With Kevin Garnett’s injury and others, the Celtics must realize that it becomes even more important as the playoffs draw closer.
The one thing missing for the Cavs and Lebron James is that NBA championship and they seem to be on a mission to acquire it again this year. Though they have come close a time or two, they are still seeking that elusive ring. The closest was two years ago and the memory is still rather bitter. They were swept in the NBA finals by San Antoinio. Then last season they were ousted by their nemisis Celtics. The Cavs have something to prove.
Lebron James realizes that the only thing missing from his trophy case is also the defining measure of an NBA player. For a player that wants to be one of the greatest of all time, Lebron realizes that he needs that ring. James is in a position this year to help the Cavs do just that. Tonight’s playoff berth is just the first baby step towards that ultimate goal, and even if they do not admit it, the Cavs are smiling about that.
